Mini Mad City

Performance Groups

We believe performing in front of an audience—whether in a large theater for hundreds of people, in a national competition before critical judges, or in an informal setting at a community event—is one of the most important components of a dancer's training.

Mad City Dancers is our resident performance and competition team, accepting dancers by audition from ages 9 and up.  All MAD City Dancers participate in the New York City Dance Alliance seminars and competition.  Many will also participate in the largest scholarship awarding ballet competition, Youth America Grand Prix.  These dancers rehearse on Saturday mornings 9-12 for Junior Company and 12-3 for Senior Company. Saturday Classes are $300 per year with additional costume, choreography and competition costs.

Junior Company features the younger dancers in the studio company, generally ages 9 to 13.  These dancers also have the honor of being apart of the opening and closing number for recital.  These dancers have also been invited guest artists for a performance number at Dance Wisconsin's New Works Performance.

Senior Company comprises older dancers, generally ages 14-19 or High School aged.  These dancers also make up the opening and closing numbers for recital.

Members of MAD City can attend anywhere from one to three dance competitions.

Expected Competition participation.

During the month of April 2015, members of the MAD City Dancers attended two very different convention/competitions where they represented themselves outstandingly.

New York City Dance Alliance is a convention/competition that focuses on contemporary dance as well as ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.  Additional solos and group pieces performed by Monona Academy of Dance earned 7 additional platinums, 5 high golds, 2 golds and 3 high silvers.  The dancers participated in two nights of competition, two days of classes and an afternoon of scholarship auditions.  Scholarships were earned by Frances V., John C., Ian A.-C., Parker B. and Sarah L.  Congratulations to all the dancers!

At Youth America Grand Prix nine dancers competed in both classical variations, contemporary solos and group pieces.  This is America’s largest most competitive ballet scholarship competition.  Maggie B. was awarded the opportunity to attend their intensive in New York City in April as did a piece choreographed by Ms. Retrum.  Following two days of intense competition by the dancers they attended class at Joffrey Ballet taught by the world renouned panel of judges.

We couldn’t be prouder of our dancers.  The Teaching Staff of Monona Academy of Dance.
