Faculty

Our teachers come from premier dance schools, colleges, and professional companies. They are highly educated in many technique styles of ballet, jazz, modern, and tap, as well as injury prevention, correct body and foot alignment, dance history, and choreography.It is a truly holistic approach to dance. We also bring in guest teachers whenever possible to expand our dancers’ education.

JoJean Retrum Professional dancer & graduate of UW-Milwaukee in dance, music and theater. Training includes studying at American Ballet Theatre and the Harkness House in NYC, and with teachers such as Gus Giordano, Luigi, and Joe Tremaine. Previously a soloist with the Milwaukee Ballet Company and Ruth Page Company, she also performed for 10 years at Melody Top Theater. Currently, JoJean is the Director of Monona Academy of Dance and the Artistic Director of Dance Wisconsin. 

Monona Academy of Dance has been at its current location for the past thirty-three years and Ms. Retrum has been the primary educator.  She prides herself on the numerous dancers that have gone on to professional careers as dancers, actors/actresses and choreographers.  She is honored that so many have returned to teach at the school or perform with Dance Wisconsin.  She is honored and her heart swells each time a student returns to visit or enrolls their child in dance at Monona Academy of Dance.

A sought after guest instuctor, Ms. Retrum recently was brought in as a guest educator at the UW-Madison Dance Department to teach her specialty - technique.  She has been honored by the Dance  Council of Wisconsin for her achievements in dance, as the Outstanding Teacher in 2002 by Youth America Grand Prix and served as Regional Dance America's - MidStates President 2012-2014.

Ashley Dahm - A graduate of Monona Academy of Dance and Dance Wisconsin, Ashley received additional training at Virginia School of the Arts, Boston, Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Nashville Ballet and Alonzo King's Lines Ballet.  She has danced professionally with Joel Hall Dancers and Jazzworks, and has returned numerous times as a guest of Dance Wisconsin.  As a Guest Artist for Dance Wisconsin she has performed principal roles in The Nutcracker, La Fille Mal Gardee, Coppelia, and New Works.  Ashley most recently performed at the Small Plates Choreography Festival in Washington D.C., where her performance was said to have "elevated the festival."  Ashley's choreography has been performed at various Regional Dance America Festivals.  An up and coming Costumer/Seamstress Ashley has had pieces performed in her custom made costumes across the United States.  Most recently by Dance Wisconsin in Chicago RDA MidStates 2015 and at the Indianapolis International Ballet Competition as well as Youth America Grand Prix and New York City Dance Alliance Competitions.

Ashley teaches, ballet, jazz and private lessons for Monona Academy of Dance.  She works with all age levels from preschool through Senior Company.  Her private lessons, technique and performance focused, have helped students improve both their technique and performance.  She has had students finsih in the top ten at New York City Dance Alliance as well as the top three in contemporary and top ten in classical variations at Youth America Grand Prix.  She also rehearses and choreographs for Dance Wisconsin.

Chelsey Dahm Bradley  - A graduate of Monona Academy of Dance and Dance Wisconsin, Chelsey studied choreography on full scholarship over a series of summers under Ronald K. Brown, Nelly Van Bommel, Kathryn Posin, Rob Kitsos and Janice Brenner.  Honors and recognitions include being a four-time National Commissioning Award Winner, 2015 finalist in Deeply rotted Dance Theatre's emerging choreographer search, 2015 Choreographic Honors Award from UW-Madison, 2014 recipient of the RDA Choreography Connection Grant, 2010 "Outstanding Dance Graduate" recognition from UW-Eau Claire and 2009 recipient of a choreographic grant.  Her original choreography as appeared at Small Plates Choreography Festival (Washington, D.C.), Dance Chicago's Future Start Choreography Showcase (Chicago IL), the Overture Center Rising Stars Talent Search (Madison WI) and numerous MidStates Festival Gala Concerts and American College Dance Festivals across the United States.  Recent commissions include:  Dance Wisconisin (WI), the Greater Lansing Ballet Company (MI) and Canton Ballet (OH).

Chelsey teaches Modern and Contemporary Classes at Monona Academy of Dance.  She works primarily with the Junior and Senior Company Dancers during the academic year, but with all dancers during the summer intensives at the school.  Her choreography for school dancers has placed in the top ten at New York City Dance Alliance and the top three at Youth America Grand Prix.

Danielle Fuhrmann - is a graduate of Monona Academy of Dance and Dance Wisconsin.  She did summer intensives at Virginia School of the Arts and Walnut Hill School for the Arts.  Danielle also has lived in New York City where she studied at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway.  Some of her professional theatre credits include:  West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, Cinderella, Annie, Legally Blonde, All Shook Up and Hairspray.  She has worked with notable directors/choreographers such as:  Phil McKinely, Chet Walker and Tony Stevens to name a few.  Danielle also performed on Disney Cruise Lines where she played various lead roles including Cinderella.  Danielle has had several of her pieces selected to be performed at Regional Dance America.  She received the National Commissioning Award for her piece "Hallelujah" and attended the National Choreography Intensive.  Danielle has also choreographed for the Children's Theatre of Madison.  She is excited to perform original Jerome Robbins choreography as Graziella this fall in West Side Story at the Fireside Theater.

Danielle teaches ballet and jazz for Monona Academy of Dance.  She works primarily with the Senior Company and periodically with the Junior Company.

Dottie Patterson - is a graduate of Monona Academy of Dance and Dance Wisconsin.  Dottie teaches our youngest dancers and creates a sound foundation for our young ballet and tap dancers.  She is the primary educator at Monona Academy of Dances' Princess/Prince Camps at both the Monona and Sun Prairie Studios. Dottie is the Store Manager of La Boutique and is responsible for the great styles of dance and footwear in the boutique.  She also functions as the primary office personal for the studio.  Dottie teaches with Dance Wisconsin's "Dance in the Schools Program" bringing to students, all over the Madison and Sun Prairie areas, their first introduction to ballet and jazz during their traditional gym classes.

Sabra Michelle - is an award winning teacher and choreogrpaher with performance and assistant choreography credits for Off-Broadway and regional theaters.  She is besty known for playing leading ladies in musicals including Lola in Damn Yankees, Cassiei in A Chorus Line, Roxie in Chicago and many others.  She was featured on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America; on the National tour of "The Pajama Game"; at President Clinton's Inauguration in George Faison's "King! A Musical Testimony" with Maya Angelou; and on the "Bear in the Big Blue House LIVE!" video (released by Jim Henson/Columbia Tristar) with whom she toured the workd for three seasons.

A native of the Washington D.C. area, Sabra received her BFA in Dance from Shenandoah Conservatory.  She also has trained in London, Paris and New York City.  Professional dance companies include: Dancin' Unlimited, Motion Mania Dance Theatre and the Ballroom Dance Company.  Sabra received the "Outstanding Excellence in Teaching" Award from the Governor's School of Virginia and her students have won awards, scholarships and Olympic medials.  She has taught hundreds of aspiring dancers, including elite American gymnasts.

Living in New York City for the past decade, Sabra has devoted herself to philanthropic work for Broadway Cares and founded The Cougar Ball, a gala fundraiser for The Actors Fund and the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative.  Sabra is also the Chief Operations Officer of C.A.T.C.H. (Choose Action To Change Humanity) Organization.

Sabra will be teaching Monday evenings in Sun Prairie this year.

Kate Mayefske - is a graduate of The Juilliard School Dance Division under Laurence Rhodes.  At Juilliard, Kate danced the modern and contemporary works of Jose' Limon, Paul Taylor, Alvin Ailey, Mark Morris, Doug Varone, Eliot Feld, Susan Marshall, Alan Hineline, Thaddeus Davis and Takehiro Ueyama.  Kate's professional dance experience includes work with Duarte Dance Works in Iowa City, as well as The Carolyn Dorfman Dance and TAKE Dance Companies both in New York City.  Classical ballet is close to Kate's heart as well with a history of roles ranging from Aurora in Sleeping Beauty to Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream.  With the UW-Madison Dance Department, Kate has taught several courses including Modern Ballet and a course of her own creation, Moving in the Female Body, under the Virginia Horne Henry Grant for Women's Physical Education.  

Kate is also a yoga instructor, focusing on the therapeutic benefits of yoga for all bodies and movers. 

 

Miye Bishop - has been a teacher and reginal dance choreographer for the last five years in Washington State, and started her teaching in Madison in 2016. She has been classically trained her whole life, first in Sendai, Japan, then in Anacortes, Washington. Miye started dancing intensively at Northwest Ballet Academy and attended summer intensives at American Ballet Theatre, Dance Open in St. Petersburg, Russia, Ballet Bellevue, International Ballet Academy, and the Kirov Academy of Ballet. Most of her training and performing experiences have been with Northwest Ballet Theatre, where she performed roles such as Cinderella, 'Clara' in the Nutcracker, 'Peasant Pas' in Giselle, 'Helena' in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 'Lucy' in Dracula, and 'Ballerina Doll' in Petrushka. She danced with the Bellingham Repertory Dance Company for four seasons where she performed works by Molly Scott, Mark Haim, Josh Beamish, and Cyrus Khambatta. Her other performing experiences have been with Ballet Bellevue, Seattle Opera, Skagit Opera, and cultural dance festivals in New York, NY, and Seoul, Korea. As a choreographer she has directed full-length ballets such as the Nutcracker, Coppelia, Paquita, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as providing guest choreography for numerous dance studios in the pacific northwest region. She is looking forward to continuing her dance career in a new city with Monona Academy of Dance, Dance Wisconsin, and Madison Contemporary Vision Dance.

Regan Batterman - is a graduate of Monona Academy of Dance and Dance Wisconsin.  She began her teaching career in 2011 as a teaching assistant on Saturday mornings with Monona Academy of Dance at the  Monona Studio location.  In 2014 and 2015 she worked primarily with Ashley Dahm and was the primary substitute teacher for Monona Academy of Dance classes of Ballet I, Tap I and below.  Regan loves working with the youngest dancers and watching their eyes light up as their minds and bodies make sense of the movements they are learning.

Regan's performance experiences began at age 8 with Dance Wisconsin when she performed the role of Elf in their Nutcracker Fantasy.  She went on to perform numerous roles with the company before becoming a core member in 2011.  Favorite roles include Rose in Waltz of the Flowers and the Queen in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  As a competitive dancer Regan placed in the top 15 on two occasions as a soloist at New York City Dance Alliance's Regional Competition in Chicago and was a member of numerous Platnium Award receiving group pieces.  She also was invited to the New York Finals on three occasions for Youth America Grand Prix as a member of group pieces presented by the MAD City Dancers.  Regan is currently a student at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and will be teaching on Saturday mornings at the Sun Prairie location.
